Yet, behind every measured incision and critical decision, there lies an often-unseen force—the subconscious mind. As a surgeon, I have come to appreciate how the conscious and subconscious minds are not just parallel entities but intertwined players in both surgical performance and human experience. CONSCIOUS VS. SUBCONSCIOUS: A FUNCTIONAL OVERVIEW The conscious mind is what we actively engage—planning, analyzing, communicating, and making deliberate choices. It’s what allows a surgeon to follow a protocol, read a CT scan, or teach a student. On the other hand, the subconscious mind stores memories, instincts, patterns, and automatic processes.
